How to Build an Emergency Fund

A simple plan to save three to six months of essential expenses without giving up everything.

Start with your essentials, not your salary

An emergency fund covers the costs you cannot stop: rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments. Add those up and you have your monthly target figure.

Pick a target number of months

Three months is a common starting point. Six months suits self-employed income, single-income households or anyone in a sector with slow hiring cycles.

Where to keep it

Keep the money separate from your current account but still instantly accessible. An easy-access savings account or cash ISA works; long fixed-term products do not.

Automate it

Set a standing order for the day after payday. Small automatic transfers beat large intermittent ones because they survive busy months.

Our emergency fund calculator shows your target, your progress and the amount still to save.
