How the FSCS Protects Your Money (And the Limits You Need to Know)
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protects eligible deposits at UK-authorised banks, building societies, and credit unions up to £120,000 per person per banking licence

⚡ Quick Answer
FSCS protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person per authorised bank, building society or credit union. Accounts under a shared banking licence share one limit; being in the same corporate group does not by itself mean a shared licence. Qualifying temporary high balances may receive up to £1.4 million protection for six months. Check the legal account provider and eligibility, rather than relying on a brand name.
The FSCS is one of those financial systems most people are only vaguely aware of until they need it — which, thankfully, is rare. But understanding the limits and the details matters for anyone with meaningful savings balances, particularly as more people hold money across both traditional banks and newer digital providers.
What the FSCS Is
The Financial Services Compensation Scheme is the UK’s statutory fund of last resort for financial services customers. It’s funded by levies on the financial services industry. If an authorised firm fails and cannot return what it owes customers, the FSCS compensates eligible depositors. In most bank failures, compensation is paid automatically within 7 working days — you don’t need to submit a claim.
The £120,000 Limit and the Per-Licence Rule
The protection limit is £120,000 per person per banking licence. The per-licence rule is where many people make an error in assuming they have more protection than they do.
Multiple brands can share one authorisation, but different banks in the same corporate group can have separate protection. NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland have separate banking licences. Use the FSCS protection checker and your provider’s depositor information sheet to identify which balances are combined. For example, £140,000 of eligible deposits under one licence would normally exceed the £120,000 limit by £20,000.
Joint Accounts
For joint accounts, each holder has their own £120,000 protection. A joint account can therefore be protected up to £240,000. This applies because the protection is per person, per licence.
Temporary High Balance Protection
Eligible temporary high balances may be protected up to £1.4 million for six months. Qualifying events include main-home transactions and certain inheritance, insurance, employment and legal payments; not every large deposit qualifies. The period starts when the funds become legally transferable to you or are first credited, and moving them does not restart it. Personal injury, disability or incapacity claims can have unlimited protection. Keep supporting records and check FSCS conditions before relying on additional cover.
E-Money Institutions: A Different Protection Model
Protection depends on the account’s legal provider and product. E-money safeguarding differs from deposit protection and should not be described as an FSCS guarantee. Tide accounts provided by ClearBank have FSCS protection for eligible deposits, aggregated with other ClearBank deposits; some legacy Tide e-money accounts use safeguarding instead. Check your account documents and Tide’s current protection explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Cash ISA FSCS-protected?
Yes — Cash ISAs at FSCS-authorised providers are covered exactly like any other eligible deposit, up to £120,000 per person per banking licence.
Do I need to file a claim if my bank fails?
Not usually. The FSCS initiates compensation automatically for most depositors. Contact FSCS directly only if you’re not contacted automatically or have a more complex situation.
Does the protection cover business savings accounts?
A sole trader’s eligible business and personal deposits share one £120,000 limit with the same bank. An eligible separate legal entity, such as a limited company, has its own deposit limit. Deposit protection has no company-size test, though exclusions apply, including to most regulated financial-services firms. See FSCS deposit eligibility guidance.
