Clear the decks first

Before investing, clear expensive short-term debt and build an emergency fund. Investing money you may need within five years exposes you to short-term falls you cannot wait out.

Use a tax-efficient wrapper

For most UK beginners a Stocks & Shares ISA is the natural home for investments. Gains and income inside an ISA are free of UK income tax and capital gains tax, within the annual allowance.

Diversify, then keep costs low

  • Spread money across regions and company sizes rather than backing single shares.
  • Compare platform charges and fund ongoing charges — they compound against you.
  • Reinvest income if you are investing for growth.

Accept that risk is the price of return

Investments can fall as well as rise, and past performance tells you nothing certain about the future. Decide your risk level once, write down why, and revisit it annually rather than after every market headline.
